Edna L. Rients, 87
A memorial service for Edna L. Rients of Lakefield took place Dec. 1 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rost Township with Pastor Stephen Weiss officiating. Music was provided by Betty Bettin, organist. Burial was at the Old Rost Cemetery. Edna Rients passed away Nov. 25 at the Jackson Good Samaritan Center. The Osterberg Funeral Home of Lakefield handled the arrangements.
Edna Louise (Voss) Rients, daughter of Louis and Emma (Koch) Voss, was born on June 23, 1927 on a farm in section 36 of Round Lake Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Edna was baptized on July 16, 1927 at St. Matthew’s and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith on March 30, 1947 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Rost Township, Jackson County. Edna attended Shady Nook Country School District 44 in Nobles County. She grew up on a farm north of Round Lake. After her education she did housework for families in the Round Lake, Worthington, Sioux Valley, and Lakefield areas. Edna was married to Herman Rients on June 27, 1947 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rost Township. They lived on a farm in Rost Township. Edna cooked at Sioux Valley School from 1962 until 1974. In 1973, the couple moved into Lakefield. Edna then worked in the cleaning department of Colonial Manor Nursing Home from 1974 until 1986. She also worked many summers at Vacation Village, Okoboji, Iowa, cleaning the cottages and working on sewing projects.
Edna enjoyed crocheting and made several projects for her children and grandchildren. She and her husband liked to take their camper and travel and camp during the summer. They also enjoyed taking their grandchildren with them.
Edna is survived by her two children Karen (Rev. Grant) Fischer of Atwater, Otis (Marilyn) Rients of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren and their spouses and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law Leonard “Jim” Rients of Lakefield and David Lewis of St. James, one sister-in-law Dorathy Rients of Demotte, Ind. and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Herman; one granddaughter, Eve Fischer; her parents Louis and Emma Voss; her stepmother Myrtle Voss; her brother Melvin Voss; two sisters Ellen and Phyllis; and her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
