Atwater Public Library was host to two different summer reading programs promoting reading among teens and Pre-K through 6th grade between May 24th and July 31, 2013. Ten girls and two boys participated in ‘Beneath the Surface,’ sponsored by the Atwater Public Library and SAMMIE (SW Area Multicounty Multitype Interlibrary Exchange). Through the aid of the grant provided by SAMMIE, the grand prize winner, Nicole Lilleberg, was able to receive a Nook HD tablet.
The Pre-K through 6th grade program, ‘Dig into Reading’ required the children to keep track of the pages that they read. This program had special guests coming to the library for all to meet, including Callie the Police Dog, Stingers Baseball players, and the Kandiyohi County Dairy Princesses. The top reading achievement went to Jillayna and Brayden Schroeder, both reading 7,440 pages. Also to note, 57 children completed their goal of reading at least 900 pages in 8 weeks. Everyone that completed their goal was treated to a personal pan pizza from Jimmy’s Pizza in Atwater and a Schwan’s soft serve ice cream cone from Peaceful Thymes. Vern’s Foods also donated Mr. Freeze Pops for all of the children. Everyone was appreciative of the donations.
Congratulations to all of the Summer Readers!
