Atwater Police Department has been utilizing a K-9 unit for a number of years. Many residents will remember Max, but not everyone knows Callie. Callie is a 6 year old Belgian Malinois, who has been serving Atwater and Kandiyohi County since September of 2008. She is partnered with Officer Ross Johnson, who has been working to keep her trained and up-to-date on the various narcotics to maintain and fine tune Callie’s skills and his own. Callie has been a part of a number of drug cases, which often result in arrest and/or convictions, as well as vehicle forfeitures. In 2012, Callie was quite active, with 19 On-Duty Deployments and 3 Public Demonstrations, such as ACGC Schools and the 221 Boy Scout Troop. She has also been assisting local agencies, including Woodland Centers, Prairie Lakes Youth Programs, and Kandiyohi Sheriff’s Department.
On July 4th, 2013, Callie showed her accuracy when she was called in to assist a Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Deputy to search the car of a 19 year old woman from Litchfield. The initial Traffic Stop was made on Highway 12 coming into Atwater due to the car crossing both the fog and center lines. Callie was called in because the deputy smelled what was believed to be burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver did hand over a small bag of marijuana prior to Callie alerting to the center console of the car and on the woman’s purse. Besides the marijuana, the woman and her passengers were in the possession of 6 grams of cocaine, 10 grams of mushrooms, synthetic marijuana, and a digital scale.
